The U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial Rehabilitation Project was started when philanthropist David M. Rubenstein donated $5.37 million to the National Park Foundation. Rubenstein's father had served in the U.S. Marine Corps. The project, which was announced in 2015 and started in 2017, aimed to add new engravings, clean, wax, paint, and restore in any ways necessary. First scaffolding was put up to examine the condition of the statues and then cleaning started. After a few months, repairs and waxing took place followed by new engravings. Over half a year later, in mid 2018, repaving of pathways, fixing lighting, landscaping, redoing sings, and visitor security was were improved. By February of 2020 the project had been complete.
