After researching some famous U.S. memorials I stumbled across the Marine Corps War Memorial. I immediately recognized the the scene being displayed since I learned about the Battle of Iwo Jima in a film class this past year. With previous knowledge about the real history behind the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima, I was curious to discover the meaning and reasoning for making it into a massive sculpture. Despite having never seen it in person, I would be very interested in taking a trip to Washington D.C. to see the Marine Corps Memorial as well as many others that live in the Arlington National Cemetery. One of the most shocking things I found was the magnitude of the memorial. From pictures, I gaged that the marines in the memorial would be life size however, they are much larger than life almost overwhelmingly so. Those who stand next to the memorial are still several feet shorter than even the base of the sculpture and I imagine the pictures don’t do it justice. Just from the pictures of it, this memorial seems to inspire, motivate, and create feelings of patriotism for its’ viewers.
