To my knowledge, there have been no major controversies over the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. There may be mixed opinions and feelings towards the memorial though there have been no acts of defacing the monument. However, some of the other memorials around the world have face minor vandalism. For instance, a smaller version of the memorial in Quantico, Virginia outside the Marine Corps Base was spray painted in 2012. No words were written but a pink line went around the base of the statue (https://potomaclocal.com/2012/12/07/quanticos-iwo-jima-memorial-defaced/#:~:text=Vandals%20Tuesday%20evening%20defaced%20the,police%20and%20canvassed%20the%20area.). Additionally, in Fall River, Massachusetts, the Iwo Jima Memorial was sprayed with a fire extinguished by two vandals (https://boston.cbslocal.com/2017/10/18/world-war-ii-memorial-defaced-vandals/). The only other controversy has to do with the identities of the men raising the flag in the famous photograph though that is a whole different discussion!
