The U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial is a generally accepted and celebrated memorial. The monument is representative of tragic losses over the course of our nation's history though it still is able to evoke deep feelings of patriotism in individuals. Though potentially up for debate, it is considered to be one of the most moving memorials in the D.C. area. The image of "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" is recreated not only in statue form but on stamps, on magazine covers, in political cartoons, and much more. At the time when the famous photograph first circulated, it was used as war propaganda to promote the U.S. and uplift national spirits which it still continues to do.
